Female circumcision is a scourge that affects us all

no to excision

“Excision is also called female genital mutilation, it is the name given to all the surgical actions which consist in removing all or part of the external genitalia of the woman. These organs can also be damaged in another way for reasons other than therapeutic, it can be for example cultural. «

But beware, this definition that I have just given you does not specify the entire barbarism of excision. Often this act is done in countries where the lack of hygiene is evident. Excision is often done with a razor, hemorrhages are therefore very frequent, the pain associated with the absence of anesthesia is terrible, of course the women come out traumatized and in the worst cases die. The risks of complications are much greater during childbirth. Excision causes complete insensitivity during their sexual intercourse and can sometimes lead to incontinence.

You should know that excision affects three million women in Africa every year. In France, this exists but the cases are quite rare and when it happens, the consequences are dramatic, for example a 7-year-old girl circumcised by her parents who had to be transported to the hospital.

Excision of the clitoris is rarely practiced in France, however it is much more so abroad. (Here is the 2011 map so you can get an idea of the FGC rate around the world).

Girls and women traveling to their countries of origin can very well be victims of excision. According to studies, 55,000 excised women live in France, they are often excised because of pressure from their elders despite the opposition of parents, these young girls are condemned to colossal health risks and a definitive absence of sexual pleasure .

The testimonies of these circumcised women send shivers down your spine, one of them tells us: “I had the impression that I would be in pain for life, that the physical pain would never go away. I don’t want to be touched by anyone, now I’m afraid of everything. « . This woman there was 13 years old when she was excised, she was also the victim of a hemorrhage.

A doctor, head of the gynecology and obstetrics department, also president of a gynecological organization without borders testifies to what he saw with his own eyes: “She was a young woman of 17, I remember as if it was yesterday, she had been forcibly circumcised while traveling in Guinea. She lived through hell, at first I couldn’t even heal her or look at the extent of the damage because the pain was so terrible, it was as if she had been tortured. «

A campaign against female excision was set up in April 2009 by the French government, several posters were put up and 100,000 brochures were distributed. This campaign was associated with another cause, forced marriage, to fight violence against women.

Here is a site that deals with violence against women:

http://www.stop-violences-femmes.gouv.fr/

On this site there are 4 types of violence referenced: Domestic violence, professional violence in the context of work, sexual assault and rape, then excision and forced marriages.

This site lists all the testimonies of women who have suffered these types of violence, this allows to give a legal position, to assist these women by telling them what to do, by advising them.

The only phone number to keep in mind: 3919

This is the telephone number of the National Federation of Women Solidarity. A group which fights for the abolition of excision, which fights against violence against women and for equality between men and women.

The call is anonymous 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
