Endocrine disruptors in our beauty products

endocrine disruptors in sex toys

The rating agency Noteo claims that 40% of our hygiene products contain endocrine disruptors. No need to point out the risks, even in small doses, that these products cause on our health and our environment.

We must all feel concerned by this essential subject. Whether it is the government that must take action, companies that must manufacture and sell products that are safe for health, or consumers who must avoid endocrine disruptors.

As a reminder, endocrine disruptors (including phthalates are part) are chemicals that disrupt the hormonal system. They cause, even in tiny doses, damage which may be irreversible, in particular if the subject is exposed during the intrauterine period.

The problem is all the more complicated since endocrine disruptors are present in many products, whether it is foundation, lipstick or even sex toys.

Thus, the Noteo * study reveals that 40% of beauty products are affected!

40% simply means that we are exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis.

This concerns, in particular, 71% of foundations, 40% of lipsticks, 38% of face creams, 36% of deodorants, 30% of toothpastes and 24% of shampoos.

These products contain at least one chemical substance that disrupts the endocrine system.

The best known are Parabens or phthalates. It should be noted that in the majority of cases, the same everyday consumer product contains several of these substances dangerous to our health. In addition, it appears, following a GreenPeace report, that the majority of sextoys contain phthalates with levels that can exceed 60%!

Baptiste Marty, President of Noteo Institut, declares: « This is about protecting our health, that of our children and our environment, which is why we are calling on the government and businesses to mobilize for research. in order to study the best possible alternatives. While waiting for these developments, we recommend that consumers be vigilant about their daily products ”.

What does the legislator do?

It is more than urgent that the government position itself for the well-being of citizens by adopting a clear strategy to reduce the population’s exposure to endocrine disruptors.

The scientific evidence is there, the link between exposure to endocrine disruptors and diseases such as cancer, fertility disorders… etc. is proven.

Endocrine disruptors are unwanted substances that we must banish from our stores and from our consumption habits.

The president of the Environment Health Network recalls that “At the origin of the National Strategy on Endocrine Disruptors (SNPE), there is the mobilization of civil society around scientific whistleblowers, taken up by a political consensus, rare in France, around the ban on Bisphenol A and legitimized by two reports from ANSES, which has become the 1st agency in the world to recognize the change in the toxicological paradigm of EDs ”.

What can we do for the consumer?

Going shopping has become a real jungle with always the same questions « what should I buy so as not to be in contact with these products? » « , » Are the big brands better than private labels? « , » Can I trust the advertising? In short, a bunch of questions that we ask ourselves regularly.

Noteo offers a simple solution that allows products to be quickly scanned and given a score out of 10. 4 criteria are taken into account: health, environment, social, budget.

The Noteo site is accessible here and you can download an application for your smartphone to consume more responsibly.
