Phthalates promote the development of asthma

phthalates promote asthma

The prestigious Columbia University, and more specifically the Mailman School, published a study aimed at alerting children to the dangers associated with the exposure of children to 2 types of phthalates: diethyl phthalate (DEP) and Butyl Benzyl Phthalate ( BBP).

(These phthalates are widely present in skincare products but also in plastic, intimate vibrator, flooring…)

The study published on September 4 in theAmerican Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine indicates that although many factors can contribute to the development of childhood asthma, phthalates play an important role.

The study was carried out on 244 children aged 5 to 9 years. The association between BBP and inflammation of the respiratory tract is found to be very high in children with wheezing, a common symptom of asthma.

As we know, phthalates are still widely used in consumer products like plastics, sex toys, floor coverings. Several phthalates are already known to be endocrine disruptors and for their neurobehavioural and negative effects on reproduction.

In fact, and as a precaution, it seems essential to avoid as much as possible the use of products containing phthalates.
